Our Mission


The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is a fraternal organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of heroes who fought and worked to save the Union. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, we are the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic.

On Friday April 6, 2012 at 6 pm the Quincy Civil War Roundtable will be dedicating a monument at the Woodland Cemetery in Quincy in honor of the 150th anniversary of the death of Dr. Samuel Everett the first surgeon killed during the American Civil War at the battle of Shiloh.

400th Milestone...

Brother Tom Oestreicher

Bro. Tom Oestreicher, John A. Logan Camp #26, Rockford, Illinois presented his 400th Civil War program at Sycamore Middle School on November 19. Brother Oestreicher has lectured to schools, historical societies, church groups, and scouts for 37 years. He has lectured in seven states, including a 10 day lecture tour in Hawaii in 2007.

John Alexander Logan (February 8, 1826, December 26, 1886) was an American soldier and political leader. He served in the Mexican-American War and was a General in the Union Army in the American Civil War. He served the state of Illinois as a Senator and was a one-time candidate for Vice President of the United States.

Our Mission

Sons of the Union Veterans Civil War- Mission To perpetuate the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic and of the men who saved the Union 1861 to 1865; to assist in every practicable way in the preservation and making available for research of documents and records pertaining to the Grand Army of the Republic and its members; to cooperate in doing honor to all who have patriotically served our country in any war; to teach patriotism, and the duties of citizenship, the true history of our country, and the love and honor of our Flag; to oppose every tendency or movement that would weaken loyalty to, or make for the destruction or impairment of our constitutional Union; and to inculcate and broadly sustain the American principles of representative government, of equal rights, and of impartial justice for all.
